THE VICTIM CENSUS OF HIEROMONK SIMEON (BIBERDŽIĆ) AS A SOURCE FOR THE SUFFERING OF STOLAC SERBS DURING WORLD WAR II

Abstract:: During World War II, the Serbs of Stolac and its surroundings suffered immense hardships. As a result of these events, the Serbian ethnic presence in this region was significantly weakened. Certain localities were almost entirely depopulated of their Serbian inhabitants after local Croats and Muslims, as supporters of the authorities of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH), committed mass atrocities against their Orthodox neighbours. Historical scholarship has not sufficiently illuminated the events of this period, and scientific knowledge on this and similar topics remains relatively scarce. The policy of "brotherhood and unity," proclaimed by the post-war communist authorities, played a major role in this, as crimes committed against the Serbian people were not adequately investigated for the sake of "peace at home." However, it must also be acknowledged that the state of historiography concerning the genocide against Serbs in the NDH has been significantly affected by the insufficient efforts of Serbian historians and the lack of a systematic approach to studying this topic. The issue of the number of Serbian victims of World War II remains a subject of considerable debate both among scholars and the general public. One of the key reasons for this is the absence of a comprehensive and reliable victim census that would approximate the actual number of casualties as closely as possible. The 1964 census of victims, conducted by the Federal Statistical Office, is currently undergoing revision by the Museum of Genocide Victims in Belgrade, and efforts in this regard should be carried out to the fullest extent possible. One potential method for ensuring the quality of this endeavour is to conduct detailed censuses at the local community level first, before consolidating the results of such research. In this regard, the victim censuses compiled by clergy in their parishes can be of great assistance. One such census is the subject of this study, and it provides a basis for revising the existing 1964 census.
