Biography
Jelena Damjanović was born on June 20, 1976, in Kosovska Mitrovica. She completed her primary and secondary education in her hometown. She earned her Master’s degree in Serbian Language and Literature in 2009 from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Priština (temporarily seated in Kosovska Mitrovica). To date, she has published several scientific and professional papers.
DR. JOSIF BELINKIS (1900–1942) – BIOGRAPHY OF A HOLOCAUST VICTIM
Abstract: Approximately 90,000 people of Jewish origin lived on the territory of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia until the outbreak of the April War in 1941. During the Holocaust (1941–1945), between 60,000 and 70,000 individuals were murdered, accounting for about two-thirds of their pre-war population. Within the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) during the same period, more than 30,000 individuals of Jewish roots were violently deprived of their lives, out of a total of 39,000 Jews found on the given territory upon the establishment of the Ustashe authorities—representing nearly 77% of their total local population. Among the victims of the Holocaust from the territory of the genocidal Independent State of Croatia was Josif Belinkis, an Ashkenazi Jew and physician born in Sarajevo. During the peaceful interwar period of the Yugoslav monarchy, he responsibly and professionally carried out his humane calling, conscientiously performing his medical duties in various parts of the country. In both military service and the civilian sector, he served as a physician in several Yugoslav cities, such as Vranje, Skopje, Radovište, Pljevlja, and his native Sarajevo. It was in Sarajevo that he witnessed the formation of the Nazi-aligned Croatian reign of terror and met his bloodthirsty executioners, who deprived him of his life in the Jasenovac death camp—one of the most monstrous locations of mass murder on the map of occupied Europe.
